A resource·SDR Hiring in the AI Era
Then OpenAI hired one.
In 2022, SDRs were at the top of every “jobs AI will replace” list. In 2026, the most AI-native companies on the planet (OpenAI, Anthropic, Clay, ElevenLabs) are building SDR functions from scratch, many for the very first time. Here's what the data actually says.
01, The data
39% of the top 200 AI companies with open GTM roles are hiring SDRs or SDR leaders right now.Adam Schoenfeld, PeerSignal, January 2026
These aren't backfills. They're 0→1 builds. Companies that have never had an SDR function are now creating the role, hiring leaders to run it, and building the operating model from scratch.
02, Who's actually hiring
OpenAI hired a Head of North America Sales Development in March 2026 at $335K–$350K, tasked with building the company's “first enterprise Sales Development organization” from zero. The job description called it “a true 0→1 build.” For a company whose product automates language, they chose to hire a human to have conversations.
Anthropic posted a BDR Manager role to “build, lead, and scale a team of 8–12 BDRs.” Clay, whose entire product is built around automating outreach, just hired Rob Cook as Head of BDR and is now recruiting “ClayDRs.” LangChain, with massive open-source adoption and a push into enterprise, posted their first SDR roles. CoreWeave is building a leadership layer before they even hire the ICs.
03, Why is this happening
PLG gets you to $10M. Enterprise takes you to $100M.
The pattern is consistent: AI companies master product-led growth, scale to tens of millions in ARR, then hit a ceiling. The ceiling is enterprise. And enterprise doesn't convert on a free trial. It converts on a conversation, specifically, on a human being navigating political complexity, building multi-threaded relationships, and creating urgency across a buying group.
AI can write the email. It cannot read the room.

05, What this means
The SDR isn't dead. The bad SDR is dead, the one sending mass-blast templates from a list they bought on LinkedIn. The SDR who knows how to run a conversation, handle a rebuttal, and get the right person on the phone? That person is more valuable than ever, because the bar for who they're competing with just got higher.
The companies that understand this are moving fast. The ones still waiting for AI to “figure out outbound” are falling behind their pipeline targets while their competitors book meetings.
